“If I read about an interesting new plant I know Grandma’s Gardens will have it. Beautiful, well cared for plants.” — Lisa M.
Who We Are
For 41 years, Grandma’s Gardens has had the privilege of serving the Greater Dayton and Greater Cincinnati area. Grandma’s Gardens is an award winning, year-round, 14 acre family friendly garden center, gift boutique and landscape design center. We’re known for our park-like setting, paved pathways winding through landscaped displays accented by antique farm and garden tools, always fresh plant selection, and of course, our atmosphere. We carry the finest, freshest nursery stock, fountains, pottery, garden art and accessories, unique gift, packed gourmet foods, Vera Bradley bags, Life is Good merchandise, food products, miniature plants and accessories, custom decor, and everything you need to create the gardens -and holidays- of your dreams!
“It started in 1979, when I had my first load of mulch dumped in my parents’ driveway. My mom and dad looked at it and said, ‘You might need a little more room’ “, Grandma’s founder, Doug Rhinehart, remembers fondly. A short time later, his parents, Pat and Jim, helped finance the purchase of a small Victorian farmhouse where Doug and his wife, Paulette, lived. They called it Grandma’s Gardens to honor the traditions of family gardening, hand-me-down plants, and all the memories of flowers that began in their own grandmas’ gardens. Visit Grandma’s today and that small farmhouse remains, now home to the Gift Shop. While the garden center itself has expanded from its original 4 acres to 14 acres of meandering paths, beautiful display gardens, 10 buildings, a goat pen and fishing pond, Grandma’s is still the same family business it’s been from the beginning. Find Grandma Pat or Grandpa Jim, still the garden center’s biggest fans, on a busy day in the Spring, and they’ll reminisce about days when protecting the annuals from cold Spring nights meant bringing all 5 flats of them into the house. From its meager start on a quiet stretch of Route 48 between Dayton and Cincinnati, the business and the suburbs around it have grown by leaps and bounds.
We invite you to Come Home to Grandma’s to experience a premier garden center and landscape design service in a warm, friendly country setting. Our selection, quality and customer service are unmatched.
Grandma’s in the Community & Around the World
Grandma’s has had the privilege to partner with our local community and with organizations around the US and around the world, and to help give back. In 2011 Grandma’s Gardens donated the landscaping for a custom home built for an injured veteran and his family in Fairborn, Ohio as part of Homes for Our Troops. For eleven years Grandma’s Gardens has been one of the few Ohio retail locations sponsoring the Trees for Troops program. Partnering with FedEx and the Christmas Spirit Foundation, and with the help of generous local families and individuals, we have sent over 1,100 fresh cut Christmas trees to military families spending their holiday season on base.
In 2014 we introduced our Trees for Life program. For every tree purchased at Grandma’s Gardens, a Moringa tree is given to a family in Kenya. These amazing trees are fast growing and extremely hardy. More importantly, nearly every part of the Moringa has a use, from their nutrient dense leaves to their seeds which can be used to purify water.
Every year, our Purple Friday Pancake Breakfast guests, Ladies Holiday Shopping Day visitors, and Christmas season shoppers provide donations of cash and needed items for the families served by the Warren County Abuse and Rape Crisis Shelter. Once again in December of 2019, 2 trips to the shelter in Lebanon were made to deliver boxes and bags of socks, slippers, toiletries, linens, stuffed animals, books, games and other necessities and a few extras for the women and children. Our generous and kind customers always help us make the holiday season, and life in general, a little less sad and stressful for families experiencing bad times.
When asked, “Is there a charge?” for the use of our beautiful antique sleigh and snowy backdrop for Christmas photos, we say no, but decided to accept optional donations for the Humane Society of Greater Dayton and our “doggy bag” started filling up. Word must have gotten around because we’ve had as many or more dogs than people posing during the Christmas seasons through 2019. We love it!
Thank You to all of our shoppers and visitors who, through your purchases, participation and generous donations, have helped us bring comfort and joy to the lives of others.
