"The History of Grandma's Gardens"

Don't we all remember the fragrance of a big fluffy peony or a fistful of fresh-picked lilacs from Grandma's gardens? It is that nostalgia for quality time with family and flowers that inspired the Rhinehart family to choose the name "Grandma's Gardens" back in 1979 when they dedicated their growing business to all grandmothers.

From a decrepit 1880s Victorian farmhouse, the very recognizable "Grandma's House" was lovingly restored by Doug and Paulette Rhinehart along with Doug's parents Jim and Pat Rhinehart and lifelong friend Jimmy Webb (our handyman). It now serves as Grandma's Gift Parlor. The house, a few trees and a chicken coop were all that made up the property in the beginning. Now our visitors and their families stroll eight wooded acres on paved paths through clever, idea-inspiring displays in greenhouses, shade-covered buildings filled with blooming plants and out past "Grandpa's Barn". On Kids Day in August and some Saturdays in spring and fall when he has time, you might find Grandpa Rhinehart or one of his friends giving train rides around The Fishin' Hole. Past that are several acres of hand-selected nursery stock from small evergreen shrubs to large shade trees and everything in between.

As of Spring, 2008, a recent purchase of land adjacent to the garden center brings our
total acreage to fourteen!  Doug tells us the land will be used for more display gardens featuring our distinctive products and design, a fabulous new water garden, more educational events and family activities, and additional parking for our ever-growing group of loyal customers.

Doug Rhinehart and Beth Reid create beautiful designs and supervise our professional crews of experienced landscapers.  This year, Homearama will be at Country Brook, just west of Grandma's -- how convenient!  You will see examples of our award-winning landscape design including garden art, fountains and some whimsical surprises as always found in Grandma's projects.
